Eye care tips during the cooler months

3 min read

As the cooler months settle in across Australia, many of us notice changes in our skin and immune system—but did you know your eyes also need extra care during winter? July and August bring drier air, wind, and increased time indoors, all of which can affect your eye comfort and health. Here’s how to protect and care for your eyes throughout the season.

1. Combat Dry Eyes from Indoor Heating

  • Artificial heating reduces humidity indoors, which can dry out your eyes and cause irritation or a gritty feeling.

  • Tip: Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air and keep your eyes (and skin) more comfortable. Remember to blink regularly, especially when using screens for long periods.

2. Stay Hydrated

  • It’s easy to forget to drink water in winter, but dehydration can contribute to dry eyes.

  • Tip: Make a habit of sipping water throughout the day, even if you’re not feeling thirsty.

3. Protect Against Cold Winds

  • Windy weather can increase tear evaporation and make your eyes feel sore or watery.

  • Tip: Wear wraparound sunglasses when outside to protect your eyes from wind, UV rays, and dust.

4. Don’t Forget UV Protection

  • Even in winter, UV rays can damage your eyes—especially on bright days or in snowy regions where sunlight reflects off surfaces.

  • Tip: Always wear sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection when outdoors.

5. Screen Time and Eye Strain

  • We often spend more time indoors watching TV or working on computers during winter.

  • Tip: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 6 meters away (20 feet) for 20 seconds to reduce digital eye strain.

6. Manage Allergies

  • Winter can bring seasonal allergies due to dust, mould, and indoor heating.

  • Tip: Keep your environment clean, and use lubricating eye drops if you experience irritation. Speak to us about allergy-specific relief if symptoms persist.

7. Schedule Your Eye Exam

  • Winter is a great time to check in on your eye health—especially if you’ve noticed discomfort or vision changes.

  • Tip: Book your regular eye exam to ensure your prescription is up to date and your eyes are in good shape for the season ahead.
